Health Promotion

This programme is geared towards producing innovative, creative and flexible graduates who will cope with the dynamic changes of technology and socio-economic needs. To enhance this, the programme is designed and developed such that it:

  1. Provides a sound foundation and connection between medical and social sciences in promoting health and develops ability in communication and entrepreneurial skills so as to give the graduates an opportunity for further training;
  2. Allows for development of skilled and professional career education with a strong base in health promotion as an emerging allied health discipline;
  3. Offers a wide base of inter-disciplinary aspects in the fields of health with a foundation in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT);
  4. Enhances graduates’ awareness towards professional, legal and socio-economic influences in the delivery of health care services;
  5. Enables graduates to be self-confident and acquire competences that solve day-to-day problems;
  6. Satisfies the specified standards in line with the National Technical Awards system; and
  7. Imparts creativeness and strong ability for the graduates to undertake given tasks competently.

It is, therefore, expected that the graduates from this programme will have aspirations to become professionals.  The programme is a modular system and will operate under semester structure.  This will facilitate a large degree of flexibility for the graduates’ future development. 

Aims of the Programme

The programme aims to achieve the following goals:

  1. To offer a flexible course that is responsive to dynamic and rapidly changing working environment and society;
  2. To provide the skills, knowledge and behaviours that are vital to the stakeholders and specifically to the employers and the community;
  3. To entice self-realisation and team work skills that enable graduates to be employable and team players;
  4. To build capacity to participate in the implementation of National Health Policy and its accompanying Operational Guidelines; and
  5. To propagate and promote moral, legal and ethical conduct among health workers within the national legal framework. 

Objectives

The objectives of this programme are to:

  1. Become a starter in career advancement and play a primary role in the management of health care services delivery;
  2. Impart appropriate knowledge, attitude and skills relevant to the control and prevention of health problems. .
  3. Steer creativity and innovativeness in response to risks inherent in the delivery of health care services;
  4. Become responsive to dynamically changing health care system, service delivery costs and technological needs;
  5. Provide a learner centred rather than programme centred education and training;.
  6. Provide an international outlook of the learning content and context so as to widen graduates advantages into regional and international labour markets. 

Roles of Health Promotion Graduate

  1. Guides and Motivates appropriate behaviour change
  2. Plans, implements, monitors and evaluates HP interventions/programmes
  3. Coordinates health promotion activities
  4. Initiates/ conducts relevant research on HP
  5. Advocates for health promotion interventions
  6. Supports development and implementation of healthy policies, legislation and related fiscal measures
  7. Facilitates documentation and sharing of health promotion experiences.
  8. Promotes and facilitates inter and intra sectoral collaboration in health promotion
  9. Facilitates Health Promotion needs assessment.
  10.  Initiates and participates alliance, networking and coalition building in HP
  11.  Integrates various existing healthy policies into HP interventions/ programmes
  12.  Initiates and implement Quality assurance in HP
  13.  Articulates key concepts, principles, approaches, global goals/strategies (MDG, poverty alleviation strategies) for HP
  14.  Mobilizes/motivates individual, communities for HP
  15.  Mobilizes and manages resources for health action
  16.  Facilitates/Supports capacity building for HP
  17.  Provides evidence based HP information for decision making at  difference levels
  18. Promotes and maintains professional ethics, values and code of practice in HP
  19.  Articulates broad/ specific determinants of health and patterns of diseases.

Admission Requirements

Admission to the programme will be open to candidates who have a minimum of Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (CSEE) at Ordinary or Advanced Level with pass at least Division III and a Certificate or Diploma in health and any health related or social studies such as Agriculture, Education, Social Welfare and Community Development.
